Info

Releasing on 1.27.15 Rey Res’ Heart Of The City lives up to its name. Written and recorded from sunsets to sunrises in a studio overlooking San Jose, California, the MC/producer also known as Rey Resurreccion embodies much of what the real S.J. is about, beyond the silicone and start-ups. Born of an immigrant Filipino family, Rey balanced the pressures to support his family with his love of Hip-Hop, graffiti, and street art culture. However, after a string of successful indie releases and mixtapes, this dedicated craftsman is all in to fight a battle to be heard, even if the odds are stacked against him.

A centerpiece within Heart Of The City is “Quarter Life,” a song that Rey Res considers both his most personal and his proudest. Featuring a detailed arrangement from former classmate Noah Luna, a collaborator of both Kanye West and Billy Joel, the revealing autobiographical song features striking vocals, and what exactly Rey is wagering after years of dedication to his passion. “I’ve been doing this for so long that if I can’t make a dope album, then I shouldn’t be doing this.” That earnestness and honesty drives the song, while Rey’s strong skills and relentless approach that tip the scale. This MC is not seeking listens and posts, he is commandeering the song, and opening his soul.

On the other side of the spectrum, the album’s first single, “Let It Bang” honors Dru Down’s 1994 Oakland crossover hit, “Pimp Of The Year.” With a catchy delivery and raspy voice, Rey maneuvers through heavy and light subject matters alike. The upbeat energy of San Jose is celebrated on this attractive chorus, quirky beat, and referenced track. The gestalt of Rey Res’ upbringing around graf writers, skaters, gang-bangers, and rappers is the kaleidoscope of this album. Seamlessly, everybody is included and gets along, as the sequencing is careful and considerate, an attribute Rey studied from the likes of Dr. Dre, Hi-Tek, and Hieroglyphics. Notably, Pep Love and Casual, along with Zumbi (Zion I) drop in on Heart Of The City, pulsing as well.

Even after the success of 2009’s Limitless and 2014’s Sleeping Giants, Rey Res’ hunger is palpable. One of the established acts of the Northern California scene, Res uses moments like the evocative “Duck Down” and the storytelling of “Sun Goes Down” to really hone in on vibe. Both a delegate and a tour guide, this is a S.J. experience that is tangibly authentic, wise, and dynamic.

Fifteen songs in total, Heart Of The City is the life-blood of Rey Res’ career. Highly personal given the context of the artist’s dedication thus far, this Ineffable Music album aims to be the tipping point to bring Resurreccion’s message to the next level. An engaging listen with the appeal that makes it succeed in its potential depth and simple vibe, Rey is the latest story of a West Coast artist with years of traceable roots who has finally made some of the most compelling music around. With his easygoing personality, humble demeanor, and legacy of hard work, the Heart beat goes on, showing itself in nearly every moment.
